Yes, cannabis is legal in Canada for both medical and recreational use. The legalization of recreational cannabis was implemented on October 17, 2018 under the Cannabis Act. As for medical cannabis, it has been legal since 2001 and is currently regulated by the Cannabis Regulations, following the Federal Medical Marijuana Program.
Cannabis is a complex substance, just like the various aspects of your health. It is therefore crucial to consume it under the supervision of healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective use.
Our doctors and nurses work closely with you to understand your medical history and health goals. They ensure that you are informed of potential risks, such as drug interactions, in order to maximize therapeutic benefits and minimize risks.
Patients authorized to use medical cannabis benefit from certain protections, such as workplace accommodations, the ability to use in appropriate public spaces, and eligibility for insurance coverage and tax credits.
It is not advisable to purchase medical cannabis from SQDC, as these protections do not apply to recreational cannabis. Medical cannabis must be obtained through appropriate channels to ensure its safe and legal use.
In Quebec, SQDC (Société québécoise du cannabis) is the only retailer authorized to sell recreational cannabis. While we cannot prohibit you from purchasing recreational cannabis from SQDC, it is important to note that their products are not intended for medical use. SQDC employees are not trained to provide medical advice on products suitable for your health condition.
If you buy your cannabis from SQDC, you won’t be able to claim it as a medical expense on your taxes or get reimbursed by your private insurance. What’s more, compassion clubs and dispensaries operate illegally in Canada.
Health Canada-licensed producers are the only legal sellers of medical cannabis in Canada. To ensure your safety and benefit from the protections and advantages associated with the use of medical cannabis, it is essential to purchase your cannabis from these authorized sellers.
Patients under the age of 18 can be treated by our clinic, but the prescription must be issued by the attending physician or specialist.
In many countries, including Quebec and other Canadian provinces, it is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis, whether for medical or recreational purposes. Laws impose strict limits on THC concentration in the blood, beyond which you could be considered incapable of driving safely.
Medical cannabis differs from recreational cannabis mainly in the purpose of its use and the regulations governing it:
Purpose of use:
Medical cannabis is prescribed to treat specific medical conditions such as chronic pain, nausea and muscle spasms, under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals.
In contrast, recreational cannabis is consumed primarily for its psychoactive effects and for the pleasure it provides.
Access and regulation :
Access to medical cannabis generally requires a medical recommendation or prescription. Products are purchased from licensed medical dispensaries and are subject to strict quality and safety standards.
For recreational cannabis, access is often through specialist stores, in accordance with local and national regulations that may include age restrictions and specific guidelines.
Available products :
Medical cannabis products are formulated to meet patients’ specific medical needs, with controlled concentrations of cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, CBG and CBN.
Medical cannabis includes both THC, a compound that can have psychoactive effects, and CBD, which produces no psychoactive effect. Patients can opt for products with a low THC content to minimize euphoric sensations, while taking advantage of CBD’s beneficial therapeutic properties.
Medical cannabis must be ordered directly from a licensed producer after your prescription has been submitted. The producer will contact you to finalize the order and ship the products directly to your home.
Medical cannabis is available in many forms, including oils, capsules, flowers, edibles (such as candy and chocolate), beverages, vaporizer cartridges, and topicals.
Medical cannabis is often used to treat conditions such as chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, epilepsy, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Dosage is determined by a healthcare professional based on the patient’s medical condition, response to treatment and individual needs. It is recommended to start with a low dose and adjust gradually.
Medical cannabis can help relieve symptoms such as chronic pain, anxiety and sleep disorders, improving quality of life by enabling patients to lead more comfortable, functional lives.
Interactions between medical cannabis and other medications are generally rare, but they do occur. It is crucial to consult your physician before making any changes to your treatment. Our physician or nurse clinician will assess your medical history to ensure your safety.
